How To Make Easy Homemade Peppermint Bark

Homemade delicious peppermint bark

When the holiday season rolls around I look forward to making some delicious treats and peppermint bark is a sweet treat, that’s great for the holidays.

What Is Peppermint Bark

Peppermint bark is a popular treat, especially around Christmas time. Typically it consists of a layer of semi-sweet or dark chocolate, a layer of white chocolate, and crushed peppermint candy cane pieces that get sprinkled on top.

How to Make Peppermint Bark

It really is so easy and is as simple as melting chocolate, pouring the chocolate onto a tray, sprinkling crushed candy canes, and letting it chill until firm.

Ingredients

  • 225 g semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 225 g white chocolate chips
  • 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract
  • 6 candy canes, crushed

Directions

  1. Crush 6 full-size candy canes.
*I use a pestle and mortar, but the most common way to do this is by placing the candy canes in a zip-lock bag and using a rolling pin to crush them into small pieces.

  2. Line a baking sheet or casserole dish with parchment paper.

  3. Fill a pot with 3″ of water and bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat to low and place a heat-proof bowl on top.
*The easiest way to melt this many chocolate chips is by using a double boiler on the stovetop. This means to boil water in a pot, once boiling place a heat-proof bowl on top of the pot, and the steam will melt the chocolate. This method will ensure the chocolate doesn’t get burnt.

  4. Add semi-sweet chocolate to the bowl, stirring occasionally until the chocolate has melted.

  5. Pour onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and spread evenly with a spatula.
*Make sure that the chocolate is nice and thin, if it’s thick it will be hard to eat.

  6. Place the tray in the fridge to set for about 20 minutes.
*It only needs to be somewhat set, if the semi-sweet/ dark chocolate sets completely the layers may separate.

  7. Over the same pot of water place another heat-proof bowl on top.

  8. Add white chocolate, stirring occasionally until melted.

  9. Remove from the heat and mix the peppermint extract into the melted chocolate chips.

  10. Pour melted white chocolate over the now firm semi-sweet chocolate, spreading evenly with a spatula.

  11. Immediately sprinkle the crushed candy canes over the chocolate.

  12. Place the tray in the fridge to set for about 20 minutes.

  13. Once the bark has hardened, remove the bark from the fridge. You can use a paring knife or a chef’s knife to neatly cut pieces, this is perfect if you want a more uniform look. Alternatively, just lift the bark and crack it into pieces with your hands and enjoy!
